[교환 준비] #1 난양공대 선택의 이유, 성적, 자소서

선택의 이유

이런 말 하기 좀 그렇긴 하지만 난양공대를 선택하게 된 이유는 우리 학교에 적혀있는 교환학교 리스트에서 떠나고 싶을 만한 학교가 없었기 때문이다. 내 개인적으로 추려 낸 두 개의 학교는 영국의 Univ. of Manchester랑 싱가포르의 Nanyang Technological Univ.였는데 마지막 순간까지 고민하다가 조금 더 공부에 매진할 수 있는 학교를 선택하게 되었다. 물론 맨체스터도 공부를 하라면 할 수 있겠지만 내가 나를 젤 잘 알지ㅎㅎ 거기까지 날라가서 공부를 어떻게 해. 파리 잔디에서 코딩하고, 벨기에 와플 와그작 거리면서 강의 듣고 있겠지. 아무튼 교환학생은 대학생이 합법적으로 맘 놓고 놀아도 되는 시기라며 유럽으로 많이들 떠나는데 사실 3학년 2학기 때 떠나는 나로서는 그저 놀기에는 시간이 아깝다는 생각이 들뿐이다. 그뿐만 아니라 높은 학교 순위도 사실 무시하지 못한다. 세계 대학평가 QS로부터 세계랭킹 12위, 아시아 랭킹 3위이고 아시아의 MIT라는데 끌리지 않을 이유가 없다. 진정한 똑똑이들은 어떻게 공부를 할까, 어떤 마음가짐으로 공부를 할까, 공부만 할까 등의 궁금증을 지금 아니면 해소할 수 없을 테니 난양공대로 지원했다.

성적

우리 학교에서 난양공대랑 토론토대가 제일 경쟁률이 치열했다고 들었는데, 난양공대를 몇 명이 지원했는지는 잘 모르겠지만 최종적으로 나를 포함하여 3명이 선발되었고, 제출한 토플 점수는 106/120, 학점은 4.02/4.5였다. 원하는 학교 10지망 까지 써서 제출할 수 있는데 난양을 제외하고는 별로 교환을 가고 싶은 생각이 없어서 1 지망으로 난양공대 하나만 썼다. 지금 생각하면 참으로도 대단한 패기가 아닐 수 없는 것이, 기말고사를 내다보고 있는 지금 이 교환학생을 떠나지 않았더라면 학기 공부 다 그만두고 알고리즘 공부랑 플젝 준비해서 인턴 지원서를 써서 어떻게든 명분 있는 휴학을 하려고 발버둥을 쳤을 것이 뻔하기 때문이다.

자기소개서

사실 교환을 위한 자기소개서를 쓰고, 면접을 준비하는 것은 본교 특성에 맞게 준비해야 한다고 생각한다. 자신의 대학교가 원하는 글로벌 인재상이 있을 수도 있고, 토플이나 학점 컷도 학교마다 다르니까 말이다.(19/10/19 추가 : 토익으로 지원한 학교도 있다. 부럽네 부러워...) 그래도 참고할 만한 자기소개서가 있으면 앞으로 지원을 하려는 사람들이 마음이 아주 조금 편해질 수도 있으니까 공개하려고 한다. 나같은 경우도 자소서가 쓰기 귀찮아서 마지막 순간까지 미루다가 전 날 밤새면서 썼기 때문에 머리 터질 것 같은 마음을 잘 알지. 괜히 이 블로그 저 블로그 탐방하고 다니는 것도 알고ㅋㅋㅋ 참고로 우리 대학은 한글, 영어 모두 써야 해서 나 같은 경우에는 영어로 먼저 쓰고 한글로 그대로 번역을 했다. 근데 영어로 쓸 때 너무 신나서 써서 영어가 조금 더 길어져버렸다. 이것이 바로 자소서 제출 12분 남겨놓고 제출한 자의 무논리, 의식의 흐름 자소서ㅋㅋㅋ

     If something must represent my life as a university student, I would proudly present '(제 영어 동아리 이름)', an English conversational club that I have found on 2017. I used to live in Australia so I wanted a club with people who are capable of debating and sharing their ideas in English fluently. Ever since I found it, this club has deeply rooted itself inside me in that the people I have met here actually changed a great deal of my thoughts. One of them is related to exchange student program. I once had a time when I believed that going on an exchange program is a waste of time, since such programs only seemed to encourage students to travel. However, a close friend of mine, who is majoring in biostatistics in her graduate school, told me that it is not true to all the people. She told me that she was offered to transfer school, which by the way was in California, from a professor not to mention an offer of internship in an IT company if her visa problem were to be handled. From that time on, exchange program seemed like an opportunity to find new untaken roads.

 

     There are two reasons to why I am applying to Nanyang Technological University(NTU). First, Singapore is the best country that I can choose as a woman who loves to learn new languages. Although I am an engineer, I always had a desire to learn new languages not to mention my choice of learning Italian back in Australia when I was eight years old. Singapore uses four languages including English and Chinese. I may not have enough time to learn other two languages since I am only applying for a semester, but I do want to study Chinese up to a level where I can have a daily conversation with a native Chinese. Many students who have experienced NTU in and out of Korea wrote a lot of reviews related to NTU’s language class. Additionally, I believe picking up various English accents are important, and faculties of NTU are from nations all over the world so it would be very helpful. With the ability to speak Chinese, and the experience of understanding various English accent will hopefully become a sturdy stepping stone for my future career.

 

     Moreover NTU ranks twelfth to thirteenth in ‘QS World University Rankings’, and sixteenth in computer science, so it’s my precious opportunity to study in a prestigious school. What I have learned the most about computer science is that student’s individual effort is closely related to one’s outcome regardless of professors’ teaching methods. However there were some portions in our school’s educational system that I don’t approve. When it comes to assessment, students become very sensitive. However some professors reuse their test papers over and over again for years, so if we don’t have the questionnaires of previous years, receiving a high GPA is like pulling down a star. However in NTU all the test sheets are mandatorily open to the students so it is more fairer to the students. Also as a women’s university student, I always get the need to take a look at how men’s code style. If I get the chance to go to NTU it would be wonderful since I get to peak into men’s style of coding as well as how students from different countries select their algorithms and data structures. 

 

     If I take the flight to Europe to study, I would get the chance to broaden my cultural sight. However I chose NTU because there is an advantage of reaching a higher satisfaction in my studies along side smart students from all over the world. In addition to my studies I have plans to participate in hackathons or ideations held in NTU. I have experienced participating in such competition twice in Korea, and won some prizes. I plan to meet up with students who are interested in these competitions and willing to win. I expect to enhance my technological capabilities, and allow myself to use my capacities to be utilized around the globe.
